Cults and extremist groups are extremely prevalent, alluring, and dangerous…and many of us are susceptible to them. During this session, a former Moonie (member of the Unification Church) and a psychologist who is an expert in the treatment of former cult members will share their personal stories and explain why extremist groups are so compelling, why and how people join, and why it is so difficult for members to leave. Students will begin to understand how to identify a cult, how to avoid becoming seduced into one, and how to help someone who is currently involved.
Fee: $35.00

Steve K. D. Eichel

My practice focuses on clients with unusual or very difficult issues and pain, often involving material they wouldn't want stored in an insurance company's records. I work intensively with shame-based disorders, including addiction, trauma, sexual dysfunction and acting-out behaviors. I see many adolescents who struggle with identity and guarded secrets. I have been extensively trained in adult, adolescent and child psychology. I am licensed and Board-certified, and I am credentialed in addictions, hypnosis, EMDR, and am a Certified Sex Therapist (AASECT). My training has been psychodynamically, existentially and experientially-informed. I consider my primary modality to be interpersonal psychotherapy, which emphasizes using the therapy relationship rather than manuals, techniques or "gimmicks." I combine that with hypnosis, CBT and EMDR when appropriate for a very integrative approach. I have special expertise in and am nationally recognized for my work in the area of social/psychological manipulation and abuse (e.g., destructive cults), coercion and trauma. I do a considerable amount of psychological testing and assessment, for other psychologists as well as for various Courts.
