The Crusades stand out in many people’s minds as gallant campaigns of medieval knights in armor driving back Muslims who had usurped the Holy Land. The Crusades did begin that way with Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, but the noble motive did not last: Western forces sacked Constantinople, the greatest city in Christendom, and the moral authority of the papacy crashed down with campaigns of extirpation aimed at gentle non-Christians in France, at Jews and at early Protestants. This course aims to present a more historically accurate picture of the impact of these conflicts.
