The People's Republic of China was established in 1949 after a brutal civil war. Subsequently, the Communist Party worked to establish a new, communist, modern nation-state that would ultimately emerge as a world superpower. Learn about China's new leaders, institutions, policies, and citizens that made up this new society. Without this period of history, many elements of modern-day China would be unrecognizable today.
