Gwenne Baile

Gwenne Baile became interested in raising chickens about 2007 when, watching The Martha Stewart Show, Martha brought a few of her chickens into her studio. A lightbulb went off in Gwenne’s head that a person could have just a few chickens and not a farm. However, chickens were illegal in her town of Haddon Township in Camden County, NJ. Once she retired from her career as an RN and Certified Nurse Midwife in 2009, she made it her mission to educate herself about backyard hens and convince her town council to change the law. Five years and many, many hours of taking chicken classes, her town passed a law allowing a pilot program in backyard chickens which essentially she authored. Her first two hens arrived the end of January, 2016. Once she had her own hens, she developed the class required by most towns in her area which she has mentored in changing their laws, too. She is certified as a Backyard Chicken Keeper from Chickens and You through the Gossamer Foundation. She also is a Certified Handler of Therapy Chickens and now certifies others. She has lectured nationally on therapy hens and is being featured in an international documentary on domestic animals featuring her two therapy hens.
