Sense and Sensibility was the first pubished novel by Jane Austen, the one that introduced her genius to the world. She originally titled the book Elinor and Marianne, but when it came time for publication, she changed the name to two abstract nouns just as she had done for Pride and Prejudice. This is the only Austen novel that has two female protagonists. Look at those characters in relation to the title as we discuss the novel’s sense, sensibility and satire. Also watch film clips from adaptations and see how much the films can add to our pleasure without ever getting it completely right.
