During the Middle Ages the Mediterranean world was wracked by the Crusades, when Christians strove mightily to rescue the Holy Land from Muslim rule. But the Crusaders, brutal and land-hungry, instead ransacked Constantinople, the greatest city in Christendom. The Papacy turned away from the Crusades to attack heretics, and the crusading spirit dissolved in orgies of destruction from Provence to Muscovy. With the Mongols at the door, the bloody Mediterranean wars of religion flickered out, until revived in our time by Osama bin Laden and his ilk. See why there is no sign these wars will never be over.
