The last decades have witnessed stunning leaps in the sophistication and proliferation of digital technologies of surveillance and information analysis, raising fears of a new trend toward "digital authoritarianism." But to what degree are dictators around the world actually adopting these technologies and successfully integrating them into their operations? What are the consequences? Focusing on the case of Venezuela, this talk unravels some of the complex and murky questions about how technology is transforming authoritarian politics around the world.
