NEW The conflict between the individual and society, between desire and duty, is a perennial theme in literature, and one which Edith Wharton vividly dramatizes in both her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Age of Innocence, and in many of her short stories. Through lively discussion of this jewel of a novel, and also of some of her equally sparkling short stories, we will follow Wharton's use of the familiar love triangle plot as she takes us on the passionate journey of lovers who struggle to follow their hearts, while simultaneously doing battle with a rigid 1870's New York society that demands strict conformity to its rules of behavior.
