Sarah Megan Thomas and Marc Lapadula bring you an in depth look at the creation of the 2019 historical drama, A Call to Spy. Little is known of the women who bravely answered the call and risked their lives during WWII. Largely filmed at Ardrossan in Villanova and written, produced and starring Sarah Megan Thomas, a Shipley School alum, this film tells the story of three of these women. Joined by Marc Lapadula, a senior lecturer in The Film Studies Program at Yale, this discussion will show what being a spy was truly like and how the film reveals their story.

Marc Lapadula

Marc Lapadula is a Senior Lecturer in Film And Media Studies at Yale University where he runs and teaches the screenwriting program. He is a playwright, screenwriter and an award-winning film producer. In addition to Yale, Marc has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate Film School. He also created the screenwriting programs at both The University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins where he won Outstanding Teaching awards. He has been invited to lecture on a wide range of classic and contemporary films across America as well as in cities in Canada, England and Mexico. His acclaimed presentations have been at many notable venues like The National Press Club, The Smithsonian Institution, The Guthrie Theater, The Commonwealth Club, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Toronto Jewish Film Festival, The New York Historical Society and The Festival of Ideas in Mexico City to name only a few. He produced ANGEL PASSING, starring Hume Cronyn and Teresa Wright. The film premiered at The Sundance Film Festival and won, among many other awards, the grand prize at Worldfest Houston. Other movies he produced include MENTOR, starring Rutger Hauer, which premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival.

The feature released to critical acclaim in 2020 (IFC Films domestically; Amazon Original in India; Netflix and Signature in Europe), and provided fuel to the specialty box office” in a pandemic landscape (Deadline). A Call to Spy won the Anti-Defamation League "Stand Up" Award, and several Audience Choice Awards. The BBC praised the film as the “Hidden Figures of the spy world.” The CIA said A Call To Spy is “the best depiction we’ve seen from Hollywood on what it is like to be a spy.” Previously, Sarah created the concept, co-wrote the story, produced, and starred in the groundbreaking "Equity,” the first female driven Wall Street thriller. The Film premiered in Dramatic Competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where it sold to Sony Pictures Classics for a profit. A.O Scott at The New York Times made "Equity" a Critic's Pick when it was released theatrically nationwide. The Hollywood Reporter reviewed Sarah's performance as "subtle, but gutsy." Sarah was honored with a Women's Image Network Award for "Equity.” Sarah also wrote, produced and starred in the romance-drama "Backwards" opposite James Van Der Beek, and has appeared in various television shows and Off-Broadway productions. On stage, she starred as Eva Braun in “Summit Conference,” extended due to popular demand and cited as “one of the most provocative dramas to be found on or off Broadway” (Curtain Up). In 2017, Fortune selected Sarah for their “Most Powerful Women, Next Generation” list. Sarah graduated with honors from Williams College, and received a graduate degree in acting at Drama Studio London.
