Herodotus' Histories, written in the 5th century BCE, is considered to be the earliest surviving work of nonfiction and one of the great masterpieces of western history. It tells of the war between the Persian empire and the Greek city-states; it also takes us on an unforgettable journey of the whole known world at the time with many marvelous stories about the people and customs of different places.
