Best known for writing Frankenstein (1818), Mary Shelley also wrote The Last Man (1826) about the final survivor of a plague that she imagined sweeping the earth in the year 2073 (!). It is a fascinating account of a dwindling band of survivors searching for their fellow humans on a gloomy "Grand Tour" of Europe. The novel is eerily reminiscent of the year 2020 and the spread of Covid-19.
