Randall EngRANDALL ENG’s music lies at the intersection of opera, music-theatre, and jazz. His opera Florida (libretto by Donna Di Novelli) premiered in 2018 at UrbanArias in Washington, DC, after development at Lyric Opera Cleveland, New York City Opera’s VOX Festival, and the Public Theater. His opera Henry’s Wife (libretto by Alexis Bernier) has been developed and presented by the Center for Contemporary Opera, American Opera Projects, the Virginia Arts Festival, and Manhattan School of Music. His latest opera with Donna Di Novelli is Before the Night Sky. A contemporary re-telling of the Greek myth of Castor and Pollux collided with the stories of their twin sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, Before the Night Sky was featured at Opera America’s New Opera Showcase at Town Hall in 2017, and is in development at American Opera Projects. Harbor, a song for soprano and orchestra created with U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith, premiered at Symphony Hall in Boston in 2019 by the Boston Pops conducted by KeithLockhart. His choral work Remain, a setting of an immigration rights pamphlet, premiered in 2018 by MasterVoices at Cooper Union in NYC. Miracles, a setting of a Walt Whitman poem, will premiere at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC by Mirror Visions Ensemble in April 2021. He has been awarded grants, prizes, and residencies from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Montalvo Arts Center, the Ucross Foundation, the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, the John Duffy Composers Institute at the Virginia Arts Festival, Boston Metro Opera, American Opera Projects, the Eugene O’Neill Music Theatre Conference, Tapestry Opera, New Dramatists, the American Music Center, and the American Composers Forum. Randall is a graduate of Harvard University, Cambridge University, and NYU/Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, where he is now an Associate Arts Professor and runs the Tisch Opera Lab. Donna Di NovelliDonna Di Novelli has a writing career that spans film, opera, music-theater and stage.Di Novelli attended the 2018 Sundance Film Festival as the co-writer of Madeline’s Madeline, directed by Josephine Decker, widely lauded as a ‘masterpiece’ and chosen as one of the top ten movies of the decade by The New Yorker magazine. The film screened at the Berlinale and BAM’s CinemaFest, is distributed by Oscilloscope, and available on Amazon Prime. She conceived and wrote the found text piece, The Good Swimmer, a Pop Requiem composed by Heidi Rodewald and directed by Kevin Newbury, which sold out in BAM’s 2018 Next Wave Festival, after a workshop at the Prototype Festival. She has written libretti for Paola Prestini’s Oceanic Verses, Kennedy Center, Barbican Centre; and for the San Francisco Opera commissioned, Heart of a Soldier, music by Grammy- nominated Christopher Theofanidis. With long-time collaborator, Randall Eng, she wrote the text for edgy, jazz-infused opera Florida, performed at UrbanArias in 2018 and with Eng is at work on a new opera, Before the Night Sky. As a lyricist, she has collaborated with Oscar-winner, Rachel Portman, composer of Little House on the Prairie, which sold out in its premiere at the Guthrie Theater and subsequently went on a National Tour. As a screenwriter, she penned the award-winning short film, Stag directed by Newbury and available on iTunes. She teaches playwriting and screenwriting at New York University.
