Initially the Church and Roman society warred over their respective approaches to chastity and sexual expression. Once Christianity became the official religion of the Empire, however, its vision of permissible sexual conduct became the norm. Eventually as the western world became increasingly secularized, the command the Church once enjoyed over the conduct of members of society began to diminish. Explore the reasons for these changes, with an eye toward understanding how social values change and what role religion plays.
