Characterized by secrecy and initiation rites, ancient mystery cults promised a closer relationship with a deity and a better afterlife. Explore the archaeology and texts about the famous mysteries at Eleusis, the Great Gods on Samothrace, and the mysterious rituals of Dionysus, Orpheus, and Mithras. While the specific practices and beliefs of these ancient cults may seem distant, their underlying themes of spiritual seeking, community, ritual, and the search for meaning continue to shape our world today.
