The conflict between the individual and society, between desire and duty, is a perennial theme in literature, and one which Edith Wharton vividly dramatizes in both her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Age of Innocence, and in many of her short stories. Through lively discussion of this jewel of a novel, and also of some of her equally sparkling short stories, we will follow Wharton's exploration of this conflict, as her young lovers struggle for happiness against the strict conformity of 1870's New York society.
