By the late summer of 1864, the Union war effort was in tatters. Battlefield casualties were appalling, the Lincoln presidency was failing, and there was no end to the war in sight. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous. Ellsworth unpacks the final, fraught months of America’s bloodiest war, and the remarkable coalition of loyal citizens who defeated the Confederacy, destroyed slavery, and gave the nation a new burst of freedom.
