As the efficacy of plastics recycling has recently gained broad attention, explore waste handling strategies in the United States and abroad, with particular attention paid to the current handling of plastic waste. U.S. strategies will be compared to those in Europe and China, with a review of the technical aspects of plastic recycling for specific types of plastics. The economic and ecological values of landfilling, incineration, and recycling of plastic waste will also be examined.

Kevin Cannon

Kevin Cannon is currently a professor at Penn State Abington College (16th year) and an assistant adjunct professor at Temple University (26th year). His research interests include both heterocyclic chemistry and the history of science. Kevin started his chemical career at age 15, working as a part-time laboratory technician at Leatex Chemical Company in Philadelphia. He earned a B.A. and Ph.D. in chemistry from Temple University and Princeton University respectively; he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member at Penn State in 2003, Kevin worked nearly 15 years as an industrial chemist, spending 3.5 years at the Dow Chemical Company (Freeport, TX) and the remaining time at Elf Atochem/Atofina/Arkema (King of Prussia, PA). Throughout most of his industrial career, Kevin taught chemistry as an adjunct at local colleges and universities, including Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia University. Kevin occasionally teaches short courses at the Wagner Free Institute in Philadelphia.
