This presentation focuses on what gives the province of Alsace, a region of France
lying between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river, a distinct flavor: its
tumultuous history, its dramatic topography equally divided between a mountain range
to the west and a fertile valley to the east, its artistic treasures—the Gothic cathedral of
Strasbourg in pink sandstone and the 13th-century Isenheim Altarpiece in Colmar, its
colorful villages and vineyards spread out on the charming Alsatian Wine Road.
Catherine Lafarge
Catherine Lafarge is Professor Emeritus of French at Bryn Mawr College where, after receiving her PhD in Romance Languages from Yale University, she spent her entire career in the French Department and, for a period of ten years, as Dean of the Graduate School. While at Bryn Mawr, she specialized in researching and teaching the literature, history and culture of 18th- century France. In her retirement years, she has developed an interest in birding and traveled extensively in search of exotic birds. She also leads tours to regional France. The next one to Alsace, under the auspices of the Main Line School Night, is scheduled for September 2019. Always a movie buff, she now directs a Film Studies Program at the Cosmopolitan Club of Philadelphia.N/A
