Jay Scarfone

Jay Scarfone and William Stillman are nationally recognized as authorities on the 1939 motion picture masterpiece The Wizard of Oz. They are the award-winning authors of several officially licensed books honoring the classic film for its anniversaries including their latest books, The Road to Oz: The Evolution, Creation and Legacy of a Motion Picture Masterpiece (2018) and The Wizard of Oz: The Official 75 th Anniversary Companion (2013). Their other titles include The Wizardry of Oz: The Artistry and Magic of the 1939 M-G-M Classic (1999 and revised and expanded edition in 2004); The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50 th Anniversary Pictorial History (1989); The Wizard of Oz: The Film Classic Comes to Life with Music and Stunning Three Dimension (2000); and the definitive reference work, The Wizard of Oz Collector’s Treasury (1992). Scarfone and Stillman were authorized by Warner Bros. as the official monthly guest bloggers for the WB Wizard of Oz Facebook page and blog (3.5 million likes). Their December 2013 Huffington Post blog, “10 Things You Never Noticed About The Wizard of Oz,” garnered national attention with 133,000 Facebook likes. Additionally, they have been contributors and advisors to countless books and periodicals dealing with Hollywood history, memorabilia, and collectibles. They have appraised rare Wizard of Oz memorabilia for auction houses and private collectors. Over a forty-year period, Scarfone and Stillman have amassed one of the country’s largest and most comprehensive collections of Oz memorabilia, including priceless costumes, props and rare imagery from M-G-M’s The Wizard of Oz, as well as pre-movie artifacts. Their television appearances include profiles on MSNBC, Discovery Channel, FX Network and HGTV. Both men were contributors, consultants, and on-camera interviewees for the Telly Award-winning 1997 documentary Oz: The American Fairyland. William Stillman is also the illustrator of The Wizard of Oz Game (Ravensburger, 1997). In spring 2000, the men were guest lecturers for and contributors to the Library of Congress’acclaimed Wizard of Oz exhibit. For autumn 2001, they were lenders to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ exhibit celebrating Al Hirschfeld’s Hollywood art, which included the 1939 campaign for The Wizard of Oz. In June 2005, they received the Judy Garland Museum Achievement Award in recognition of their work. Both men were guest lecturers for the November 2014 Bonhams/Turner Classic Movies auction at which the Cowardly Lion costume brought $3 million. Scarfone and Stillman served as chairmen for The International Wizard of Oz Club’s east coast Munchkin Convention in 1989 and 1999, at which time they were awarded for their contributions. Jay Scarfone has served on the board of directors of The International Wizard of Oz Club. As the 1996-2000 Editor-in-Chief of The Baum Bugle, the Oz Club’s official journal, William Stillman expanded the scope and volume of the publication, introducing a number of “firsts” for the journal such as interior color artwork, editions typically exceeding 40 pages, and the Bugle’s first perfect-bound spine. In 2016 Scarfone and Stillman were given the L. Frank Baum Award by the International Wizard of Oz Club in recognition of their various contributions to the greater Oz saga.
