We know so many of you LOVE Italy and are heartbroken about the especially dire situation there. In tribute and with hope, Carla, in special collaboration with MLSN will be offering Keeping Italy in Our Hearts & Minds, a special series of four inspiring 50-minutes lectures accompanied by stunning slideshows celebrating why we love Italy so. Week 1: The Alchemy of Italy: Wed, Apr 15 th, 7 PM What is it about Italy? Cultural Superpower yet merely a mountainous Mediterranean peninsula, Italy has exerted an outsized force on the world, Western civilization and the popular imagination over the course of millennia. Explore the special alchemy of Italy and the “cultural DNA” that has made Italy not only so influential, but also so beloved. Week 2: Leading Ladies of the Renaissance: Wed, Apr 22, 7 PM Explore the evolution of the perceptions of women from antiquity through the Renaissance, the inflection-point when our concept of the modern woman took shape. You will discover the lives and legacies women such as Isabella D’Este, Vittoria Colonna and Artemisia Gentileschi whose accomplishments can still inspire us today as well as the stories of several unheralded women who inspired some of most beloved artists and greatest artworks of all time. Week 3: Venice: The Most Improbable of Cities: Wed, Apr 29 & Thu, Apr 30, 7 PM Discover some of Venice’s many secrets and celebrate the city of myth, mystery, might and majesty that has captured the imagination of dreamers and travelers alike for hundreds of years. This capacious topic will be presented in two 50-minute lecture / slideshows Part 1: Apr 29, From its inauspicious beginnings at the end of the Roman empire as a lagoon-based refugee encampment to its apex as a commercial, naval & financial juggernaut and Xanadu of architecture & cultural cross-currents. Part 2: Apr 30, From its pinnacle as the cultural & luxury capital of Europe through its slow yet opulent & sybaritic decline and ultimately to its reinvention as a real-life fantasy destination and the world’s most enchanting open-air museum.

Carla Gambescia

Carla Gambescia is the author of the acclaimed book La Dolce Vita University: An Unconventional Guide to Italian Culture from A-to-Z, a rousing tribute to Italy, Italians and a culture that has contributed so much to the world. The book was the winner of the Silver Prize for “Best Travel Book of the Year 2019” awarded by the North American Travel Journalists Association. A native of Philadelphia, Carla is also a marketing executive, former restaurateur and avid traveler; she co-created the Giro del Gelato bike tour which won OUTSIDE Magazine’s Best Trip in Western Europe.
