Dogs communicate how they feel through their body language. If you know the signals you can become an expert at knowing what your dog or another’s is saying. Learn how to use these insights to keep your kids safe around dogs, preventing dog bites, how your dog (and you) should greet strange dogs, managing reactive dogs, best equipment for safe walking and what to know about dog parks. Discuss choosing the right dog for your family, including adjusting to a new baby and other ways to build a good relationship between your dog and all family members.

Carin Ford has loved dogs all her life, but it wasn’t until she got a dog from a puppy mill that she dived into dog training in earnest. Using science-backed positive reinforcement training techniques, she is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers, the leading independent certifying organization for the dog training profession.“With positive reinforcement, training is both fun and an incredible bonding experience for you and your dog,” Carin says. “I’m a big believer in setting dogs and people up for success. Not only is positive training an enjoyable process, but it really works.”In addition to her private clients, Carin has spent the past several years working with the behavioral issues of shelter dogs, and also has a certificate in Life-Saving Centered Animal Shelter Management from University of the Pacific. She is one of the founders of DogsHome, a nonprofit rescue that has the mission of providing homeless dogs with shelter, quality care, training, re-homing and lifetime support. “The key to working with dogs is learning how to ‘speak dog,’ and that’s what I help my clients do,” Carin says. “Communication is a two-way process, and dogs have an entirely different language from ours – most of which is nonverbal. Many people think their dogs are mind-readers because the dogs know what they’re going to do even before they do it! Carin also has had dozens of romantic short stories published in national magazines, and her feature stories have appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
