Enjoy learning “fascinating facts” and “interesting oddities” about Philadelphia heroes and historic sites new to many of us. Discover: where the Acadians lived; who may have been the city’s first nude model; what Philadelphian has more than 40 towns named after him; where the Liberty Bell really received “an additional crack”; what the Eagles’ connection is to the U.S. Custom House, and more! It’s like a fast and fun survey class of Philly history. This is one of the only books that features the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Library Company of Philadelphia and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia.
Jim Murphy
Jim Murphy is a certified Philadelphia tour guide and author of over 50 articles on Philadelphia’s heroes and historic sites. Many of these stories first appeared in the Society Hill Reporter and Queen Village Neighbors Association Magazine. Jim’s updated columns, along with nine new ones, are now being compiled into a book to be published by Temple University Press in 2021. He also spearheaded William Penn birthday celebrations at Welcome Park and City Hall in Philadelphia, and led a free 3-hour “Jane's Walk” celebrating William Penn’s 375th birthday in October 2019. In addition, Jim guided the first half of three 12-hour Great River-to-River Tours conducted by the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides, and served on its Board for about four years. Jim has presented this William Penn program to professional associations, historical societies, churches, libraries, community groups, high-rise condos and cooperatives in Philadelphia, Delaware County and New Jersey. Jim lived in Delaware County most of his life, and wrote and edited “Choices,” the award-winning magazine of the Franklin Mint FCU Magazine “Choices” for nine years. At that time, “Choices” had a circulation of 80,000 copies. A former creative director of copy for Devon Direct Marketing and Advertising, Jim has run his own marketing consulting business since 2004. He moved to center city Philadelphia – just blocks away from Independence Mall – where he loves to read newspapers, sip coffee and appreciate the difficult work that went into creating our nation.murfman1@comcast.net
