Sixth Street from Vine to South has been called “The Avenue of Freedom“ and sites along the way reflect the racial and social complexities faced by Philadelphia residents since its founding. Go beneath the surface of textbook Colonial history and hear neglected stories about slavery, free Black communities, abolitionists and Philadelphia's vital role in the Underground Railroad. Viewed within this context, familiar sites including the U.S. Mint, Free Quaker Meeting House, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Washington Square will acquire a deeper meaning. Our guide will be Joe Becton, who has been leading Underground Railroad Tours for more than 20 years and won the National Network to Freedom Award for Philadelphia Underground Railroad Walking Tour in 2004
