What began as a journalistic endeavor in The New York Times and subsequently published in book form, The 1619 Project immediately drew a potent mix of both praise and criticism. The work, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first African slaves arriving in the English colony of Virginia, has been vasriously called "essential reading" and "revisionist history."
