The play is called The Scottish Play rather than its name to ward off the misfortunes that have occurred in many of its productions. Understandably, everyone is skittish; the play takes place in a world with supernatural forces. “Something wicked this way comes,” the witches say, prophetically. Macbeth’s ambition, goaded to fever pitch by Lady Macbeth, brings about their downfall. Discussion considers the nature of evil and the overwhelming desire for power.
