Along the riverfront in Tinicum Township is the oldest surviving quarantine facility in the Western Hemisphere. Built in response to devastating yellow fever epidemics, it was the gateway to Philadelphia where all arriving ships, passengers, and cargos were inspected and quarantined if necessary. Enjoy a guided tour of this “monument to a hidden history” and learn the legacy of how cities protectied themselves before laboratory medicine and germ theory; when quarantine looked and felt very different from that of COVID-19.
