The legend of Faust, the story of man’s bargain with the devil, has been treated by many writers and finds its ultimate expression in the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s depiction of the conflict of science with superstition and faith. Focus on the poetic significance of the play as well as its historical and sociopolitical relevance for today's momentous challenges.

Azade Seyhan

Azade Seyhan is the former Fairbank Professor in the Humanities and current Research Professor in German and Comparative Literature at Bryn Mawr College She is the recipient of national and international teaching and research awards and the author of several books, including Representation and Its Discontents: The Critical Legacy of German Romanticism, Writing Outside the Nation, and Tales of Crossed Destinies: The Modern Turkish Novel in a Comparative Context, as well as numerous articles on German idealism and romanticism, translation studies, exile narratives, and bilingualism.
