"In the middle of this our life…” With these words, Italian poet Dante Alighieri begins one of the greatest achievements of the poetic imagination in history.  In each of the three sessions, we will explore one of  Dante’s Canticas — Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso.  With attention to art, poetry, and theology inspired by Dante, we may discover that this medieval whirlwind tour of the afterlife has something to say to this our life today.

Kevin Hughes

Kevin Hughes is Professor of Historical Theology and Chair of Theology & Religious Studies at Villanova University. His interests as a teacher and scholar are in Catholic theology and spirituality, art and poetry, mystical theology, and contemplative practice. He is the author or editor of four books, including Constructing Antichrist: Paul, Biblical Commentary, and the Development of Doctrine in the Early Middle Ages and Church History: Faith Handed On, along with articles appearing in publications such as Modern Theology, Theological Studies, Commonweal, and Church Life Journal. He is a nationally-known retreat leader, writer, and speaker on Catholic faith, history, and spirituality. He has three adult daughters, and he lives in Media, PA with his wife Bridget, a ceramic artist.
