Smith’s novel, set in London, examines how mixed-race characters struggle with unstable identities.  The daughter of a Jamaican mother and British father, Smith reveals the contradiction of being both native born and an outsider. Reading and discussing her most recent essays on politics in the U.S. and Great Britain, along with the novel, underscore the current anxiety produced by migration in America and abroad.
