Today the Olympic Games are a sporting phenomenon, watched and participated in by athletes and spectators from across the world. In 8th Century BC Greece, however, the Games began as a religious festival at the sanctuary of Olympia. In this lecture, Dr. Chris Adamson will introduce the archaeological site, explore some of the amazing discoveries found there, and explain how the ancient Games worked. Discuss the long history of the ancient Games, how they came to an end, and why in the 19th Century people were inspired to revive them.

Chris Adamson
Dr Christopher Adamson is an archaeologist and educator from Oxford, England. He has a Master's in Classics from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, and Master's and Doctoral degrees in Classical Archaeology from the University of Oxford. Dr Adamson specialises in Prehistoric and Early Greece and his research explores the ways in which early Greek communities used shared cultural memories as a means of forging shared identities. Christopher works in education, organising short academic programmes in Oxford for students from around the world, and has enjoyed accompanying tour groups around Greece as an expert archaeologist for over ten years.N/A
