Haiku is commonly perceived as nature poetry, and little wonder: it originated centuries ago in a mostly rural Japan and historically has dealt with mostly natural subjects. According to the United Nations, since 2007 more of the world’s population lives in urban than rural areas … yet haiku has never been more popular, and not just with country folk. In fact, it’s become an international phenomenon. Could haiku be about more than cherry blossoms and leaping frogs? Discover some surprising—and surprisingly engaging—haiku poetry, and come to see today’s world with new eyes.
