Many stories are told by and about each president during his (someday her!) time in office.  Over three decades have passed since Ronald Reagan left the presidency, and it is now possible to sift through those stories and learn more accurately about what kind of president he was, and what kind of presidency he carried out, and why.  Presidency scholar Barrett draws on declassified information to illuminate this fascinating subject.

David Barrett

I am professor of political science at Villanova University. This is my 36th year at Villanova. I am author of four books dealing with Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, especially their handling of the Vietnam War, and their relations with the CIA. They have been reviewed in such publications as the Washington Post and the New York Review of Books. I am currently writing a comprehensive history of the CIA and the Kennedy presidency. I have taught the course, “U. S. Presidency,” many times. I grew up in Louisiana and Texas, attended Notre Dame as an undergrad, and then worked in broadcasting, most importantly as producer and host of local programs on the PBS television station, WNIT, in South Bend, Indiana. I ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in Indiana in 1984, then went to England to earn a master’s degree in political science. After returning to Notre Dame and earning a Ph. D., I came to Villanova.
